Pheasants are game birds native to China and Tibet. Male pheasants are very brightly coloured while the females are smaller and are shades of brown. That helps the females hide when they are nesting. The extravagant males will display and "fluff" their neck cape feathers for the females (see bottom pnoto) but only on the same side as the female is standing. Pheasants don't fly well, but can run really fast. They roost in trees and are hard to see in the wild.

This isn't a great photo, but it illustrates well the differences between the male pheasant on the left and the female on the right. The male is displaying his "cape" for her. |
